Hi Janette - I want to thank you for a very personal thing. When I saw your photo album, from your photo of Arena's plaque to the Fallen Heroes of World War II I noticed that the name of my ancestor Domenico Ida` had been removed. We Arenesi found out that during the Mussolini regime the Fascist mayor of Arena had it removed because Domenico Ida` was ill before the war and he died not in battle but of his illness when he returned home. We Arenesi were outraged: if Domenico Ida` was ill before the war and he enlisted anyway, he was twice a hero. So we petitioned the President of Italy to have the name reinstated, and it was granted. Now the name of my ancestor will be placed again on the plaque, and his name will not be lost to the memory of our Hometown. Grazie Janette!

I am a descendent granddaughter of Michaelina Gerace Calabrese born July 29, 1893? in Arena Italy. Her mother's name, nunziatta gerace; she had sisters Giovanni and Giaonne? (JOANNE). Mcy grandfather was Dominic Calabrese born January 6, 1890, in Arena. He was the son of Theresa Calabrese, had a 1/2 brother Michael? I believe his fathers name was Joseph Calabrese. My Granddfather came to America via Ellis Island when he was 16yrs old and resided in Geneva NY for most of his 89 yrs. Anyone with any information regarding the Gerace and Calabrese Families in Arena Italy please contact me: esculli2@rochester.rr.com or lizmikesculli@hotmail.com (facebook). I would love to meet my grandparents families, aunts, uncles, cousins to learn about my roots and theirs.

Thanks so much for any information you may have.
We will be flying into Calabria Italy around the 7/8th of August, of 2012 and would love to know more about my family.

Arena is a beautiful village i myself have been there many times when my wifes grandparents were alive alot has changed since their passing but i sure will go and visit again and would recommend it to anyone travelling through Calabria.
