Rome, Itlay part 3

The view looking down over Rome from Palatine Hill.

* * *

A portrait of the Colosseum in Rome…

* * *

A cross section of the Colosseum and a disappointed crowd

after the Colosseum was closed early because of the free

concert  by Billy Joel and Bryan Adams in  August 2006.

We were only in Rome for 2 days and this was our last day

and we had saved the best till last

-  the Inside of the Colosseum.

We were shocked to be locked out event though we had

only purchased our tickets an hour before being

refused entry – Not happy Jan!!!

However the highlight of our walk around Palatine Hill,

was the sound of  Billy Joel & Bryan Adams  rehearsing.

Unfortunately we were unable to stay for the concert -

the City of Rome were expecting a crowd of 400,000

to turn out.

Looking inside the Colosseum…

* * *

Peeking through the arch of the Colosseum…

* * *

On the left you can see the stage where Billy Joel

and Bryan Adams held their concert

- right next to the Colosseum,

what a stunning location!

Panoramas of Portofino, Liguria, Genoa, Italy

P1260036 SH S black watermark 50% web

We were all excited when we arrived early in the morning,

as usual we had a plan for squeezing in as much as

possible in just one day. Like Dubrovnik, we started

with all the high things that involve climbing up the hill first

- while we are still fresh and then working our way back

down to the marina to explore everything else.

P1140935 C SL S SE black watermark 35% web

Our Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship – Legend of the seas in

Portofino, Liguria, GE, Italy. When visiting small ports like

Portofino, Split and Santorini be prepared for the

amount of time it takes to move almost two thousand

people into small tenders (the ships life boats)

to be taken into shore.

On the return journey there was a bit of swell

which made it a pretty lumpy ride back to the ship.

A wave slopped into our tender and came across the floor

and wet a lot of peoples shoes and jeans, especially

ours as we were near the opening.

Just as well we Australians don’t mind getting our feet wet.

We also knew the alternative wasn’t good, if the captain

thinks it’s not safe you don’t get to go on shore at all

and that would have been really grim.

Mandurah Crabs – Blue Manna or Blue Swimmer Crabs

•March 18, 2009 • 1 Comment

p1230114-shs-sc-poster-50-s-ae-50-crop-12x8-black-50-web

Mandurah, Western Australia is home to Blue Swimmer

Crab’s and mussels.

All of the blue male and grey/brown female crabs turn red when cooked,

this one above is cooking on the BBQ.

The most common way to cook them is boiling them in fresh

water or in the fresh sea water that they were caught in.

We cook our crabs for 6 min’s from the time the water comes

back to the boil, and the flesh is sweet and firm, but we go to the trouble

of looking after our catch by keeping them in plenty of fresh sea water

and covering them with a wet towel the to keep the direct sun off them

and if possible they are put in a shady area on the boat.

The other school of thought is to boil them for 10 min’s,

but why not try both methods

to see which you prefer.

The crabs in the catch bucket grab onto each other.

Mandurah is so famous for its crabs that it has an annual

Crab Festival in March every year. Also Australia’s second largest boat show is held in

October at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club (M.O.F.S.C.)

each year and is definatley worth a visit.

This crab has been caught in the Peel Inlet (or Mandurah Estuary).

We came across this great second hand shop on the walk from the

train station to the walled city. (This photo has a painted effect applied

to it so click on it to view a larger version.)

Lucca is a wonderful walled town that has been incredibly well preserved,

and is a fun place to explore. The locals use an amazing variety of

pushbikes to zoom peacefully around town, all in all its a very

romantic medieval village well worth a visit.

Fairly close by are Florence, Pizza and Siena.
